Meanings and Words

To me, “Open Source” was longhand for “free.”

It wasn’t always synonymous, but the terms were often paired.

Somewhere along the way, folks started calling things “open source” but then keeping secrets.

This allowed them to use the term and market their wares as “of the people,” while making sure to privatize the — well, it’s not really “profit.” They’re privatizing hype.

Nowadays, when something is referred to as “open source,” I envision a cereal box with nothing in it.
